Microsoft joins Apple in $3tn market cap club

US stocks ticked higher on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 closing at a record high for the third session in a row.

The benchmark ended the day 0.3 per cent higher, notching a four-session winning streak, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4 per cent. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 0.05 percentage points to 4.14 per cent.

After the bell Netflix reported big customer gains, rising 7 per cent in after-hours trading.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis will report gross domestic product figures on Thursday, which are forecast to show the US economy grew 2 per cent in the three months to December, slower than the 4.9 per cent recorded in the third quarter.
